44 inspirational camera kits | SmallHD global contest results

By 02/29/2016Giveaway

During the month of February, we teamed up with Rode Microphones, Anton Bauer and Manfrotto to give content creators a chance to win some “on-camera confidence.”

We asked artists to show their personality and creativity by submitting a flat lay style photo of their camera kit (and boy did they deliver).

With hundreds of submissions to choose from, we’re taking the time to highlight 44 outstanding images and congratulating Renārs Vilnis, our Let’s Get It On-Camera contest winner!

“These are two of my favorite film cameras! First my trusty Rolliflex Sl35, German made with the lenses that really make this camera come alive, the Schneider-Kreuznach 35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8, and 135mm f3.5. I simply love this camera, so easy and intuitive to use, it shoots like an extension of my hand. Then there is my first foray into rangefinders, my wonderful Canon G-III QL. Its so small and light and produces great images. I carry a Sekonic Studio Deluxe III light meter to get a feel for where I should be on my exposures. I also keep a multi tool on hand as I sometimes have had to tweak my camera a bit to keep it going, sadly, but they are as old as I am and sometimes need a little help… I am a film buff, I even earned a degree in film making, and the movie stub is what I last saw- The Hateful Eight on glorious 70mm! This should, I hope, explain Mr. Spock hanging out there. I took him to work and brought him home in my backpack with my cameras the other day, he isn’t a regular in there, but happened to be there as I unpacked my bag for this shoot. Then there is the CineStill 50 and 800 film rolls. Such character, I love shooting on repacked motion picture film! I always have a camera with me, and my iPhone is what I have with me most if not all the time. Thats my lock screen image, and my favorite eye color! When I am out walking the streets of Seattle I will have music playing from my phone in my headphones to keep mind distracted so I can just see what is happening around me and try to find those special moments. Now the T-shirts are not usually in my bag, but rather on me. I have a closet full of geeky photography and video shirts, I just have to dress the part! Lastly blue and purple are my favorite colors, thus the blue light and the purple throw on the table that I bought from a man on the beach in Thailand some years ago.”

“The tree of movie making Every movie I make starts as an idea in my head. When I come up with something interesting during one of my journeys around the world (represented by the atlas and the New Zealand flag), while doing sports or making music I immediately write it down in my black and brown leather notebook I try to carry with me as often as possible. When it is too unhandy to carry around with me and I’ve got an idea however, I write it down on one of these small papers and put them in the book when I come home. As the idea starts to grow I start writing things on bigger sheets and finally type the final script on my tablet. Just then I start planning the shoot itself. During the making I sacrifice everything I think is necessary to get the results I want so I don’t stop from diving in the ocean to hiking up to a mountain’s summit. I travel around with my gear – a Panasonic camcorder, 2 tripods and a smaller one, reflectors, small mics, a tabletop dolly and my steadycam – I get up early and stay up late. But I always try to stay focused on the roots: the story.”

“Video allows creative people to work in nearly any industry. For the last five years, my passion has been safety. Some people relish likes, shares, and view counts, but my focus is keeping people safe. I am a nuclear storyteller. Serving the Carolinas to make powerful videos that draw on human emotion to rethink our everyday decisions. Due to the nature of my work, the general public does not get to see many of my videos. It is my responsibility to create videos that employees connect with and understand that we want them to go home safe at the end of the day to see their loved ones. I do not have a crew, or even an assistant. I am a run’n’gun shooter, loaded up with more gear than a Ghostbuster. The plants are extremely hot, loud, and no doubt powerful. But, the important thing I am proud of is they are safer than ever. This gear helps me create the stories that are viewed by thousands of hard-working individuals. This gear helps me keep people safe. “When heading up a mountain to film athletes or shoot landscape photos, having the lightest pack possible is critical, especially when you’re snowboarding off a volcano peak with climbing, avalanche, and camera gear. You only take what you need and so I focus on the smallest and lightest gear I can and making sure each piece of equipment is versatile. Gear: – Panasonic GH4 – Zoom H6 – Rode Video Mic Pro – Pilot Fly Camera Gimbal – Panasonic Flash and Neewer 216 LED Light Kit – Variety of lenses ranging from a 7.5mm Fisheye to a Panasonic 100-300mm. “The wonderful A7s in it’s Movcam cage is the centre of this kit with the Samyang 35mm cine lens and Zeiss 24-70 as perfect companions. Powering this little baby however is down to the LanParte battery + plate, capturing great in camera audio with the Rode video mic Pro. Framing up/ keeping in crisp focus with the Aputure V2 screen and Proaim follow focus. Shooting Slog 2 the Fotga Matte box houses the ND filters, keeping that pesky light out the way. Never leave home without my personalised harddrives, glasses, watch and of course some electrical tape. On camera audio isn’t always enough and so the Zoom H4n with it’s Sennheiser ME 66 and wind shield works well. Heisenberg is just my trusty companion, leave him out of this!”

“My C300-2 effiency Kit: Since i finally could move away from Dslr filming i found the bigger cameras slow you down by much, which makes choosing the right gear and accesories even more important to be fast and precise everytime. Canon Cinema Eos C300 Mk. II – rigged with the Kessler-Kwick-Release-Long-Plate + Zacuto C300 Studio-Baseplate + Woodencamera Lens support. On Top the C300 Mk II-Helmet + the swiss army knife on handles by zacuto. The Rode Stereo Mic X can be mounted by a Zacuto Zud(15mm Tube) onto the handle and is shielded with the included rode deadcat. I carry one Gerber Multitool with me where ever i go and also one Leyzene Torx Tool and a Leyzene Allen-Key-Block. For the camera i carry 2 batteries to get me through the day aswell as a Transcend 256Gb Cfast 2.0 Card (80 minutes of 4K goodnes) and the corresponding Cfast-Card-Reader by Lexar. The short Zacuto Z-arm will help me hold my F&V Z180S – Bicolor Led light. To nail every exposure i count on my Sekonic 478D lightmeter since shooting in Clog2 and exposing by 1 Stop over everytime needs to controlled. My lens of choice right now is the EF 11-24 F4 L by Canon – on a fullframe it has this magic effect of drawing you in the picture and on the S35 Sensor of the C300-2 it is still great and pretty wide for a crop-sensor, especially for the 100fps slow-motion where the camera crops in even further. And since i am preparing for getting a smallhd 702 bright i have thrown in the propper batteries by canon and Sony + a costum fit SDI cable and thanks to my polarized Oakley Chainlink sunglasses i am safe, no matter how bright your monitor may be.”

“In the bottom left corner, you can see the most important thing for making movies: your imagination ! I’ve also got a camera bag on my head, it can protect you against the rain. On the right of me, there’s my camera (Panasonic fz200), a tripod release, a lens hood, a charger, a very little tripod, a swiss-knife (it can also be a screwdriver !), a pen, a gopro and some gaffer tape, ’cause gaffer is life. For the “camera” body (if you look good, it makes a camera), there is a tool case, a work-light with his tripod, a Hama tripod with his bag, a Planet Hollywood hat, because it’s pretty cold in Switzerland, a melon hat, because it’s really classy, a plate of tortellinis (I was hungry when I took this picture) and a notebook, where’s writing Small HD in English and in French (Petit HD). On the top, it’s the Rode Videomic Pro (old version…), attached to the Rode micro boompole and connected in the Zoom h5. Just one thing is missing in this photo: a Small HD monitor ! That’s why I send you this picture ;)”

“As you can see, i can hear everything clear with my Sennheiser HD25, but i have a Sony A6000, and the LCD and EVF is sooo bad, I’m always anxious until i get home to see the footage! So this image shows i’m blind without a monitor and dreaming about zebras 😀 My job regularly involves setting up three GoPro-s in a car, which is a pain by connecting through wifi to each. Having a monitor would make that soo much easier too. I have a Tascam DR60d, and Rode Videomic Pro, and two pairs of RodeLink, working great. Cheers!”
