Continuing to go beyond the typical “field monitor” design, we’ve come up with a simple, ergonomic menu navigation system unlike any other field monitor on the market. Much like the button/scroll-wheel layout of most DSLR cameras, it offers an incredibly natural feel, and more importantly is intuitive enough for anyone to learn quickly. As proof of its simplicity, the operator can carry the DP6 and navigate through its menu simultaneously, using only one hand.

Every camera operator or DP has their own methods that allow them to work comfortably; with that in mind we included a 2 user-defined function buttons which can be mapped and instantly switch on or off the effect of your choice, from focus assist to sharpness to P2P to Freeze Frame, the choice is yours.

DP6 Focus Assurance/Assist

One of the underlying principles behind SmallHD’s products is that they should greatly improve the operator’s ability to focus a high-definition camera. Increasing resolution is step number 1, as it adds detail to a scene that you wouldn’t otherwise see. In addition, the DP6 and the DP4 now offer one of the most accurate in-monitor Focus Assist filters on the market. This “Peaking” filter reduces the overall brightness of the scene, then places a bright white line around the edges of anything within the focus plane, making focus incredibly clear.

DP6 Sharpness Assist

The Sharpness function of the DP6 serves to accentuate sharp edges by looking for areas with rapid changes in contrast and makes that difference even greater. Essentially it acts as a focus assist while still leaving the image integrity largely unchanged as to allow for monitoring of all aspects of the shot in question simultaneously.

We try very hard to make sure you’re buying technology that will advance forward, rather than become quickly outdated. In addition to using the highest-end hardware we could find, we’ve created a way to add new features to the DP6’s menu system through a simple USB firmware interface. We’ll always be working on new features, and as a result, your feedback will directly influence the development of our menu from this point onward.

DP6 Menu and Image Flip

Image Flip offers several benefits that meet specific shooting needs. If you happen to shoot with a non-flip 35mm adapter, this function will flip your image back right-side up. Secondly, since the DP6 has inputs on the top and bottom of the monitor, Image Flip and Menu Flip give you the ability to decide which way you want your cables to come out. For instance, if you want your SDI cables to come out the bottom, turn on Image Flip and Menu Flip, then turn the monitor upside-down. No more cable fuss.

Apart from the general benefit of not having to adjust the scale setting regularly, the true advantage of auto aspect-ratio detection comes when using Canon’s 5D Mark 2, or Rebel T2i. With a differing output resolution between standby and record mode, these cameras can be frustrating to work with as they force the operator to live with a squished image during one of these modes. Not anymore. Auto Aspect Detect eliminates any stretching or squishing no matter how often you switch modes.

Some cameras' output signals do not fill a monitor’s screen completely (such as the Phantom high-speed camera, ALL Canon and Nikon DSLRs, etc). Unique to SmallHD’s product line, the DP6’s customizable image scaling function enables the operator to quickly and easily fill the full screen with the incoming signal, removing those useless black bars, giving you a more detailed look at the scene.

  • Works quickly
  • Perfect for Canon 5D/7D/1D/T2i pillar-box image output

If you need to double check focus, or need a slightly closer look at an element of your scene, 1:1 pixel mapping does the trick when it comes to 1080i/1080p signals, showing you a bit more detail than when the image is scaled to fit the screen.

Simple and novel, the backlight brightness adjustment allows you to choose whether to crank things up for bright, outdoor situations, or turn things back to conserve battery when in the studio setting.
